What a root canal actually treats
Root canal treatment becomes necessary when the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen from deep decay, a crack or fracture, repeated dental work on the same tooth, or trauma.
When the pulp is compromised, the bacteria involved don’t stay contained. Left untreated, infection can spread to surrounding bone and tissue, create an abscess, and eventually threaten the tooth itself.

Diagnosis first
Before any treatment begins, we use CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) imaging to get a complete three-dimensional view of the affected tooth, its roots, and the surrounding bone. Standard X-rays show two dimensions. CBCT shows us the full picture — the number of canals, the shape of each root, and exactly where the infection is. This matters for treatment planning. Guessing doesn’t.
Comfortable numbing
The idea of a root canal being painful usually traces back to the infection, not the treatment itself. We use local anesthesia to fully numb the area before anything starts, and for patients who want an especially gentle numbing experience, we use The Wand®, a computer-controlled anesthesia system that delivers anesthetic at a slow, steady rate, significantly more comfortable than a traditional injection. If you need sedation on top of that, we have those options too.
Thorough cleaning and sealing
Once you’re numb, a small opening is made in the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected tissue is carefully removed, and each canal is cleaned and shaped. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to prevent reinfection. Most root canals at Milagro Dental are completed in one appointment.
Crown restoration
After a root canal, the tooth typically needs a crown to protect it and restore full chewing function. With our CEREC milling system, we can design, mill, and place a custom ceramic crown in a single visit. You don’t have to come back a second time, wear a temporary, or wait weeks for a lab. Will a root canal hurt?

The procedure itself should not be painful. You’ll be fully numb before we begin, and we won’t proceed until you are. The sensitivity and discomfort you may be feeling right now — from the infection — is what we’re treating. Most patients feel significant relief within 24 to 48 hours after the appointment.
How long does a root canal take?

Most root canals at Milagro Dental are completed in a single appointment, typically lasting one to two hours, depending on the complexity of the case and how many canals the tooth has. Molars generally take longer than front teeth.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?

In most cases, yes. A crown protects the treated tooth from fracture and restores its function. With our CEREC system, we can often place the crown the same day as the root canal — no second visit, no temporary crown.
What happens if I don’t get a root canal?

The infection will progress. Without treatment, the tooth may abscess, become non-restorable, and require extraction. The infection can also spread beyond the tooth into the surrounding bone and, in serious cases, into the bloodstream. Treating it promptly is always the better outcome.
Is it better to extract the tooth than get a root canal?

In most situations, no. Your natural tooth is the best tooth. Keeping it preserves the surrounding bone, maintains the alignment of neighboring teeth, and avoids the cost and complexity of tooth replacement. Root canal treatment, when successful, can preserve a tooth for decades.
