Santa Fe Sleep Apnea Dentist
Sleep apnea treatment that supports your health and your rest
As your Santa Fe sleep apnea dentist, we use a take-home WatchPAT device to gather the data a sleep physician needs to evaluate your condition. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, we can provide a custom sleep apnea oral appliance designed to help keep your airway open while you sleep.
Why dentists are often the first to identify sleep apnea
Sleep apnea often shows up in the mouth first. Dentists are uniquely positioned to spot signs that go unnoticed elsewhere: worn tooth surfaces from grinding (bruxism), scalloped tongue edges, an enlarged uvula, a narrow palate, or a recessed jaw that may reduce airway space.
At Milagro Dental, we look at airway health as part of every comprehensive exam. If we notice signs that suggest a patient may be struggling with disordered breathing during sleep, we bring it up because catching it early matters. Untreated sleep apnea is linked to higher risks of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and daytime cognitive impairment.
We use the WatchPAT home sleep testing device, which allows you to get a medically recognized sleep study in the comfort of your own home. If results indicate obstructive sleep apnea, we work closely with physicians to coordinate care and, when appropriate, offer oral appliance therapy as an alternative or complement to CPAP.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you diagnose sleep apnea in your office?
What kind of treatment do you offer?
Is a sleep apnea mouthpiece comfortable?
What is obstructive sleep apnea?
Can an oral appliance replace CPAP?
For some patients, yes. For others, it may be an alternative worth discussing depending on the severity of the condition and physician recommendations.
How soon will I notice a difference?
What is an oral appliance for sleep apnea?
An oral appliance is a custom-fitted device worn during sleep that repositions the lower jaw slightly forward to keep the airway open. It works by preventing the tongue and soft tissues from collapsing into the airway, the same mechanism that causes obstructive sleep apnea. For mild to moderate sleep apnea, oral appliances are a clinically validated treatment that many patients find more comfortable and easier to use than CPAP.
Who is a candidate for oral appliance therapy?
Oral appliance therapy is typically recommended for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for those with severe sleep apnea who can't tolerate CPAP. It's also used in combination with CPAP therapy for some patients. A proper sleep study is needed first to confirm the diagnosis and severity before recommending treatment.
Is the WatchPAT home sleep test accurate?
Yes. WatchPAT is an FDA-cleared, clinically validated home sleep testing device that measures peripheral arterial tone, oxygen saturation, heart rate, body position, and movement. It's been shown to reliably diagnose obstructive sleep apnea when compared to traditional polysomnography (an in-lab sleep study). Your results are reviewed by a sleep-certified physician.
Does teeth grinding mean I have sleep apnea?
Not necessarily, but there's a significant overlap. Bruxism (teeth grinding) and sleep apnea frequently co-occur. Grinding can be the body's response to airway obstruction — as breathing becomes restricted during sleep, the jaw clenches and moves in an attempt to reopen the airway. If we see significant wear on your teeth, we'll often ask about sleep quality and snoring as part of our evaluation.
