How CEREC technology makes same-day crowns possible
CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a system that combines digital scanning, computer-aided design, and in-office milling to produce a custom ceramic crown in about an hour, start to finish, in a single appointment.
The process begins with a digital scan of your tooth. There are no messy impressions and no temporary crown to wear while waiting weeks for a lab to fabricate your restoration. The digital design is sent directly to our in-office milling machine, which carves your crown from a single block of high-quality ceramic. Once it’s ready, we bond it in place and make any final adjustments.
The result is a permanent, durable crown that fits precisely and matches the shade of your surrounding teeth. Many patients find it remarkable that something this precise and lifelike can be made the same day.
When a same-day crown may be the right choice
You have a damaged or broken tooth
A crown can rebuild and protect a tooth that has been cracked, weakened, or badly worn down.
You have a large filling that no longer offers enough support
When a tooth has lost too much structure, a crown can provide the full coverage needed to keep it stable.
You have had a root canal
Many teeth need crowns after root canal treatment to restore strength and reduce the risk of fracture.
You want to avoid multiple appointments
If your schedule is full or you simply prefer efficient treatment, Santa Fe same-day crowns can save time without sacrificing quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are dental crowns for?
What is CEREC?
How long does it take to get a same-day crown?
Are same-day crowns as durable as traditional crowns?
Do I need a dental crown?
How long do CEREC same-day crowns last?
With proper care, CEREC crowns last 10 to 15 years or more — comparable to traditionally made crowns. The ceramic material is strong, biocompatible, and resistant to staining. Avoiding biting on ice or very hard objects, and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth, helps protect the crown over time.
Is a same-day crown as strong as a traditional crown?
Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from high-strength dental ceramic that's been extensively tested for durability. For most teeth — including molars that take the most force — they perform comparably to lab-made crowns. In some complex cases involving extreme bite forces, a different material may be recommended, and we'll discuss that with you.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed before any preparation begins, so the procedure itself should be comfortable. We use The Wand® for computer-guided anesthesia, which delivers numbing more smoothly and precisely than traditional injections. Some mild sensitivity in the days after the crown is placed is normal and typically resolves quickly.
When is a crown necessary vs. a filling?
A filling is appropriate for smaller areas of decay or damage where most of the natural tooth structure is intact. A crown is recommended when a tooth is cracked, has extensive decay, has had a root canal, or is otherwise weakened to the point where a filling won't hold or protect it long-term. We'll always explain why a crown is being recommended and show you the imaging that supports the recommendation.
